It's time to think about your New Years Eve celebrations and I’ll be the first to say it- it’s OK to stay HOME and avoid the crazy crowds and parties around town. It’s actually better than OK- it’s exactly what we’re doing this year and it can be so much fun! Instead of going out, throw your own New Years Eve party at home and celebrate bringing in the new year with your closest friends and family!

In this post, we’re going to run through what goes into throwing a good New Years Eve party at home, how to actually throw the NYE party, and I’ll be sharing some great tips for throwing your NYE party at home!

Let’s dive in!

What Goes Into a Good New Years Eve Party at Home?

Throwing a good New Years Eve party at home comes down to a few things. First, your guest list plays a huge role. You have to decide who you want to be ringing in the new year with. I might even argue this is the MOST important decision you’re going to make. While it might be a fun idea to have loads of your friends and family over, keep it intimate. You’ll run less of a risk of feeling depleted of energy trying to entertain the masses and there’s always the clean up afterward. Definitely figure out what works for you, but keep this Big Sister Tip in mind!

Next let’s discuss the fun part-the food, drinks, things to do, and most importantly, what you all are doing at midnight! I have some tips for all of these things down below so that you can easily throw your best New Years Eve party at home!

How to Throw a NYE Party at Home

Okay, so we know what does into the party, but how do we actually throw one?

Well, first off, you gotta start with a theme. I always suggest the classic Great Gatsby/Roaring 20’s theme. It is an oldie but a goodie. It is also so easy to put together and offers so much opportunity for your party.

You could keep it basic and just have some themed decor up and maybe even a game or two related to the theme, or you can go all out and have your guests dress up, make all of the food and drinks on theme, and more!

Then I suggest choosing the times of your party. Usually, parties don’t have a set end time but I suggest listing an end time for a New Years Eve party at home so that you know when you can clean up and get to bed since it will obviously be a late, late night!

Finally, you have to decide on the food and drinks situation. Keep on reading for some great ideas for what to serve at your New Years Eve party at home!

5 Tips for Throwing a New Years Eve Party at Home

  1. Plan out the type of food for the evening

  2. Decide on drinks

  3. Check out party kits for easy New Years Eve decor

  4. Offer plenty to do for your guests

  5. Have a big star of the show to end the night with when the clock strikes midnight

1. Plan out the Food

Food can go many ways for a New Years Eve party, but my best suggestion would be to stick to appetizers and desserts! If you decide to plan out a full meal menu, go right ahead. But personally, that sounds like a bit more work and structure than what I would want for a casual and easy New Years Eve party at home!

One thing you must decide is if you will be solely providing the food, or if you’ll have a more pot luck style where your guests will bring their own dishes.

Appetizers - there are so many great appetizers you could choose for your New Years Eve party. You could have fun and make them all on “theme” for the night, or you could keep things simple and just serve some of your favorites (a charcuterie board is always a great call).

Desserts - after the appetizers comes desserts! I suggest going on theme here. You can go simple with a NYE themed cake, or go all out with party favor canolis! Get creative!

2. Decide on Drinks

I suggest offering both cocktails and mocktails at your New Years Eve at home party. Not everyone drinks alcohol and there should be an option for everyone! You can keep it simple and just offer some wine and martinellis, or you can go all out and make some themed cocktails and mocktails!

Cocktails - Have some fun here! Make some NYE punch for a crowd or some themed margaritas. There is so much you can do!

Mocktails - Mocktails are just cocktails without alcohol. Find any kind of recipes you like and just sub out the alcohol with something like sprite or club soda!

3. Buy Some Party Decor the Easy Way

I always love a simple party hack for decorating and party kits come in clutch for things like New Years Eve parties! Amazon has SO many party kits that you can buy to easily decorate your home for your New Years Eve party at home!

4. Offer Plenty to do for Your Guests

Now for the most important part of the party, what you’re going to be doing!

Games - games are important. They’ll help pass the time and will offer a great way for your friends to bond! Click here for some great New Years Eve party games!

Photo Booth - a great idea for your New Years Eve party at home is a photo booth/station. You can easily purchase a little NYE dress up kit from Amazon and let your guests have some fun taking pictures! Better yet, buy an Instax camera and let your guests take their pictures home with them! This photo frame prop was also so much fun! It’s featured in the image below.

Vision Board - lastly, the most fun of all. Get together and make New Years Eve vision boards! You can go two ways here. You could go digital and use something like Canva to make your own for your wallpapers, or you could break out the poster board and glue images from magazines or prints to them the old school way!

5. Have a Star of the Show for Midnight

Lastly, figure out what you want to do at Midnight on New Years Eve! I suggest something fun like a balloon drop.

Now you should be ready to throw your own New Years Eve party at home this year! What do you think you’ll include from this list?
